Dealing with Resistance in Treatment: Getting Unstuck

2019-01-29 @ 9:30 am - 4:00 pm

One of the most common reasons for poor outcome, early termination or even open hostility in sessions is related to a wall existing between the client and the service provider. This wall is known as “resistance.” Attempting to tear down the wall can lead to further distance being created in the therapeutic relationship, early termination or regression.

Resistance is a response to a perceived threat. When we find that a client is not moving towards goal achievement, resistance may be the issue. With this understanding, clinicians can respond more effectively to engage clients when resistance emerges. Participants will discover a wide range of practical tools, techniques and activities and strategies will be provided which can be brought into any therapeutic relationship to reduce the incidence of resistance emerging.
