Canadian Paediatric Society clinical practice recommendations for assessment of children and youth with autism spectrum disorder [2019]

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impairments in social communication, restricted interests, and repetitive patterns of behaviour as well as unusual sensory sensitivities or interests. ASD is a diverse and multifaceted condition that varies in both expression across individuals and in its long-term trajectory, which contributes to challenges in patient assessment. Accurate and timely diagnosis is essential to promoting optimal functioning and long-term outcomes by allowing children and youth with ASD to access evidence-based interventions.
