Supporting young women who use substances

September 19 @ 1:00 pm 4:00 pm

While substance use disorders can affect anyone, young women often face unique and complex challenges. This presentation aims to illuminate these challenges, helping service providers develop a deep understanding and practical skills. We will explore how trauma, societal oppression, and gender-based violence contribute to and shape patterns of substance use.

The central objective of this session is for participants to identify and comprehend the distinct needs of young women who use substances. We will investigate the underlying reasons for substance use, intervention strategies, and practical applications, with a particular emphasis on the importance of trauma-informed care. Participants will have the opportunity to learn innovative engagement strategies and clinical approaches, enhancing their understanding of the intersection between gender and substance use. Through case studies, various theoretical frameworks, and an anti-oppressive and anti-colonial approach, participants will critically engage with the material and effectively apply it in their practice.
