The Bridge: 2025 Summit on Involuntary Treatment for Addiction – Hamilton HSJCC – 2025-03-28

Presented by the Hamilton Local Human Services and Justice Coordinating Committee on March 28, 2025. This event will focus on the ‘hot topic’ of forced/coercive treatment for addictions. The goal: to bring together experts in the fields of research, clinical intervention, and legal considerations related to forced/coercive treatment for addictions.

Background:

In August 2023, Premier Danielle Smith announced a mandate called the “Alberta Model” to address and support those pursuing addiction recovery. Within the controversial mandate is the policy that could force people struggling with addictions into treatment. Premier Smith states that this response is more compassionate than letting those living with mental illness and addiction live on the streets. The Compassionate Intervention Act would give police and family members or legal guardians of drug users the ability to refer adults and youth into involuntary treatment if they pose a risk to themselves and others.

Ethical issues, previous failed attempts, and other solutions to the issue immediately rose to the forefront. Amid the support and vocal opposition, other provinces are now grappling with what this could mean closer to home if Premier Smith succeeds in her mandate.
