Sankofa Focused Healing: Mental Health & Black Youth in the Justice System
February 1 @ 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm
Widespread anti-Black racism pervades the criminal justice system, where Black youth are disproportionately represented. Regardless of their age, Black youth are often perceived in the system as agitators to be feared rather than as children in need of protection and support.
YouthREX is excited to partner with Sankofa Psychotherapy & Consultancy Group for this online workshop to explore practice strategies for supporting the mental health of Black youth in the criminal justice system. How can we learn from Sankofa focused healing approaches — meaning ‘to go back and fetch it’, including knowledge, love, health, joy, and self-esteem?
How can we:
safeguard the emotional and psychological safety of Black youth?
support their navigation of the justice system, advocating for their mental health and wellbeing?
help to mitigate the cumulative impacts of anti-Black racism — including disempowerment and isolation?
The workshop will be co-facilitated by Gail Cetinja-Wedderburn and Micah Dell, co-founders of Sankofa Psychotherapy & Consultancy Group.
The workshop will include drumming by Negus Medhin and a storytelling performance by Kesha Christie.
